Self-Deception: When We Lie to Ourselves

I've had some time to think about this subject of self-deception, lately, and even though this may offend some people, I've come to a point in my life that I don't care anymore. I care about what I feel is right even if that hurts someone's feelings.

For a long time now, I've been feeling that our world is on a runaway train with being politically correct or placating fantasies. When do we feel that "do no harm" is exactly what we're doing to any individual being allowed their self-deception? I can hear it now: but, but, but.... There are no buts when it comes to actuality.

It's one thing to say, that a person deceiving them self of thinking they're a werewolf or vampire, for instance, shouldn't be allowed, because it may, advertently, harm others - if taken too far. However, what about the harm to others, inadvertently, created by one's fantasy? Is it truly okay to say that one should be allowed their self-deception when karma (cause and effect) is in play in all things - effecting all things - if not now, than later? Like the proverbial ripple of a rock in a pond.

When do we decide that mental illness is a serious thing that can harm anyone in its path and we're contributing to it by our allowance? If a person looks in a mirror and sees a man but says he identifies with being a unicorn, isn't he lying to himself based on physical evidence? Aren't we contributing to the lie when he wants us to go along with it?

Would it be any different if a white woman looked in her mirror but said she identifies with being a black woman? A black man looking in his mirror but identifies as being oriental? Any person looking in their mirror and seeing a human but identifies with anything but human? Yet, we, as a society, have to turn our backs on scientific fact in order to placate that ego? To ignore tangible evidence to appease the intangible?

Isn't that what's called enabling? Would we do that with any other fantasy that may lead to destructive behavior? No, we wouldn't! Or, at least, we shouldn't. Then why should we enable anything else that is harmful because someone wants to deceive themselves and wants us to participate?

As I was taught, allowing doesn't mean putting up with. How many more lines, in the sand, do we draw? How many more times do we cross them because of being politically correct? Or allowing another's fantasy, that they know is a lie when they look in their mirror? When they look into society's mirror? Or, is society becoming so allowing that they too are caught up in self-deception?
