Writers: Baring One's Soul

Earnest Hemingway's quote about bleeding when you write gave me an ah-ha moment. As a writer, I believe I know why he felt that way. It's sharing one's heart and knowing it will be opened to the slings and arrows of public criticism. It's the same for any artist, crafter, dancer, actor, musician, singer, or entertainer, and realizing that what we do is allowing a double edge sword to our emotions: condemnation or commendation.

Many writers bare their soul, sharing their truth within, sometimes with obsession and without any thought of glory. Yes, recognition may be important but unloading this burden off our chest is too. We have a story to tell and writing becomes our creative outlet. To stop doing what we love isn't an option. We know that criticism may cause suffering, but if we don't write what's profoundly felt, we may suffer (bleed) more than any opprobrium from another.
